Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

A Level 6 qualification for health and safety professionals, accredited by IOSH, preparing learners for certified membership and career advancement across various industries. 

  • The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a competence-based qualification designed for individuals responsible for health and safety in their workplace. This qualification enables candidates to demonstrate their practical skills, understanding, and knowledge in occupational health and safety. It is aimed at those who have responsibility for the development, implementation, and review of health and safety procedures within an organisation.

    As a generic qualification, it is suitable for individuals working in various industries who wish to advance their careers in health and safety roles.


    IOSH Accreditation:
    This programme has been accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Eligible enrolled learners can access IOSH Student Membership for the duration of their studies. On successful completion of this Level 6 qualification, alongside a minimum of two years’ experience, learners will meet the requirements for Certified IOSH membership.

    Certified membership is the gateway to Chartered status. As IOSH is the only organisation in the world that offers Chartered membership to health and safety practitioners, this can help learners achieve the highest professional standards and gain international recognition.

  • The candidate should have experience in Occupational Health and Safety and/or hold a qualification such as the Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or the NEBOSH National General Certificate.
    The candidate must have a good understanding of the English language and be working in a role with health and safety responsibilities in any industry.

    Crystal&Co will undertake an initial assessment with the candidate to ensure this qualification is appropriate before enrolment. This will help identify any gaps and assist in planning the assessment.

  • To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate your competency, knowledge, and understanding by completing each unit. The assessment process is based on work-based evidence and knowledge tasks—there are no exams.


    Assessment Methods
    Your assessment will consist of the following methods:

    • Questions & Answers – Knowledge tasks completed via our online portal.

    • Work-Based Evidence Submission – Providing relevant workplace documents.

    • Additional Methods (if required) – This may include Professional Discussions, Witness Statements, or Reflective Accounts.

    Assessment Process

    • Initial Assessment & Induction – After enrolment, you will undergo an initial assessment to determine your experience and readiness for the qualification. You will also complete an induction that explains the assessment requirements, process, and expectations.

    • Assessment Plan – An individual assessment plan will be created, outlining the units to be covered and the types of evidence required. The plan helps you track progress and ensures you understand what needs to be completed.

    • E-Portfolio Access – You will receive login details for our online platform, where you can access your assessment 24/7.

    • Assessor Support – Each candidate is assigned a dedicated assessor who provides continuous guidance and support. Our assessors are available via telephone, email, or the portal, seven days a week.

    • Duration & Flexibility – The qualification can be completed within one to six months, depending on individual circumstances. Candidates have 12 months of full access and support.

    Evidence Requirements
    Assessment is workplace-based, requiring a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competency. Accepted evidence includes:

    • Observations – Direct assessments of your work performance.

    • Witness Testimonies – Statements from managers or colleagues confirming your competency.

    • Professional Discussions – Conversations with your assessor to confirm your knowledge.

    • Written Reports – Documents detailing how you have applied health and safety practices in your role.

    • Supporting Documents (e.g., Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Audits, Accident Reports) – Your assessor will provide guidance outlining the required evidence.

    Evidence collected within the past two years can be submitted, allowing candidates to utilise existing documentation without unnecessary repetition. Your assessor will review your submitted evidence and provide feedback to ensure it meets the required standards.

  • This qualification includes eight mandatory units and two optional units.

    Eight Mandatory Units:

    • Promote a Positive Health and Safety Culture

    • Develop and Implement Effective Communication Systems for Health and Safety Information

    • Develop and Maintain Individual and Organisational Competence in Health and Safety Matters

    • Control Health and Safety Risks

    • Develop, Implement and Review Proactive Monitoring Systems for Health and Safety

    • Develop, Implement and Review Reactive Monitoring Systems for Health and Safety

    • Develop and Implement Health and Safety Review Systems

    • Develop, Implement and Monitor Behavioural Safety in the Workplace

    Optional Units (Choose Two):

    • Manage Contractors to Ensure Compliance with Health and Safety

    • Develop and Implement Health and Safety Induction Processes

    • Influence and Keep Pace with Improvements in Health and Safety Practice

    • Develop and Implement the Health and Safety Policy

    • Develop and Implement Health and Safety Emergency Response Systems and Procedures

    IOSH Membership Eligibility:
    To qualify for IOSH membership, candidates must successfully complete this Level 6 qualification alongside a minimum of two years’ relevant experience.

  • Once all units are completed, your assigned assessor will review your portfolio and provide feedback.
    After addressing the feedback, your portfolio will be submitted to one of our Internal Quality Assurers (IQAs) for final review.
    Upon approval, you will be awarded the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice.
